Here it is again. That application question that you never know how to answer. You aren't alone. Many job seekers have issues they don't know how to address on an application or in an interview. Hopefully these few tips will help you make decisions about how to approach sensitive subjects with employers. 1. Do NOT lose confidence in yourself due to issues outside your control or because of a mistake you made in the past. 2. Always, always be honest on your application and during the interview process. 3. On the application, be straightforward about the situation in question but don't elaborate or add detailed explanations. These can be addressed during the interview. 4. Focus on the positive impact and value you can bring to the organization. 5. During the interview, don't become defensive when an employer questions you about your past issue. Explain briefly and provide references who can verify that you are a dependable and trustworthy individual who is qualified for the position you are seeking. 6. Be aware that most everyone has to apply for many positions before receiving a job offer. Don't take it as a personal rejection if you don't receive a call back. 7. Don't give up. You have skills and talents that are needed in the workplace. Keep trying and your hard work will pay off. For job seekers with a criminal record: Do some research to see which companies consider hiring individuals with background challenges. Be up front with potential employers. Be sure to talk with each of your references so they will be expecting calls from prospective employers and are prepared to answer questions. For job seekers who have been terminated: Answer honestly while avoiding being negative about your previous employer. State what happened as simply as possible. Being fired is never pleasant but a potential employer does not need all the details of the conflict. For job seekers with no degree: Some employers are willing to accept work experience in lieu of a degree but please do not apply unless you are sure you meet all other qualifications. Good luck with your job search. Keep smiling and don't give up!
