Hi, this is Bill Kasko , President and CEO of Frontline Source Group, Inc. a temporary staffing and direct hire employment placement agency based out of Dallas , TX . Don’t you wish you just KNEW what the hiring manager was looking for when they were reading your resume? If you knew what they were looking for it would be so much easier to create your resume….wouldn’t it? Here are a few key points to think about when you are creating your resume.
First, the number one mistake that applicants make is not tailoring their resume towards the specific job for which they are applying. The first thing a hiring manager will ask is: “Can this applicant fill my need?” In a nutshell, if an applicant who has a Human Resource background applies for an Accountant position the hiring manager will put it to the side as an unrelated applicant. Positioning your skills and experience in a manner that highlights matches to the job opening would be your best bet. Also, do not list your work experience as a server or administrative assistant if you are applying for an IT position. Make sure you stay focused on the specific job you are applying for. Second, it costs the company significantly to hire someone who is not a fit. It is very important for a hiring manager to make sure the person who is being hired will be at the company long-term. If you have been in your last position for over a year you would want to use a Functional Resume. A Functional Resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history. Another great idea is to add certifications, specific educational courses exc. to show that you are dedicated to your profession. Last, a well-written resume gives you the best chance of being called for an interview and, ultimately, landing the position you desire. The hiring manager is looking for someone who is professional. Many typos or missing information on your resume will only hurt your chances. He/she does not have time to call you to ask questions they may have about your resume, so make sure all your information is clear. Don’t leave any unexplained gaps that would leave someone confused. A hiring manager must go over hundreds of resumes….this is your chance to stand out!
