Blog Post: Handling gaps in your resume

posted Tuesday, June 16, 2009 6:54 PM

Whether you have chosen to re-enter the workforce after taking time off or your job search has simply taken longer than you've expected, you may have a gap in your resume and don't know how to fill it.

Offer information - if you have chosen to stay at home or have taken some time for travel, you have definitely gained some skills. In cases like these, list what you have done as a gap filler, for example "Traveled Europe" you can them list the skills you learned that you feel have made you a better job candidate" built relationships quickly with other travelers",. "able to feel comfortable in new environments", "self starter and able to work in groups or alone", etc.

If you're gap is due to your job search list what you have done on the side (be aware that you should always be doing something to better yourself as a candidate). So, things like volunteering, joining new networking groups or associations, etc.

Remember, recruiters will focus more on what you do have listed on your resume more so than the the information not listed, so be sure you are focusing your attention on making that information really speak to the recruiter. Don't just list your duties (i.e. customer service), list your accomplishments (i.e. kept customer retention at 90% with strong customer service skills and one-on-one relationship building.)

My gap is due to surgery to remove a brain tumor. I feel like it has left a dark cloud over me and employers are hesitant to give me the chance to prove myself. How should I handle the interview questions, and reassure the prospective employer that I am fully recovered?

Robin - I also have a 2 year gap due to an accident. I have done small consulting jobs and am very active volunteer in the local chapter of the American Marketing Assoc., which has lead me to a board position with them. Although I am still looking, the work I am doing for the association has shown my abilities and increased my network 1000 fold. I have people sending me job leads on a daily basis.

I have a 7 year gap due to seeking my Bachelors degree while moving around the country with my military spouse. I am currently employed but under employed and it seems my newly (May 2008) acquired BS degree is a double edge sword. I penalized for the gap in significant employement. How do I package this information in my resume to get to the next level fitting my degree?

I can wholly identify with two comments:
1] Robin b/c I'm disabled.
2] Micheal b/c my BS in IS degree doesn't seem to matter as much as experience.
Sadly I have no advice to offer.
