Blog Post: On your next interview - be a storyteller.
posted Sunday, March 2, 2008 9:14 PM
Last week I had the pleasure of having coffee with a new friend from Lincoln Tech over in Grand Prairie. Although we were talking about working together on a project, I couldn't help being struck by her communication style. As our conversation progressed, she shared that for nearly a decade she earned her living as a professional Storyteller. What an amazing profession. She went on to tell me that there are even Storyteller Conventions and networks. I found her facinating and one of the best conversationalists I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with.
So, it got me to thinking. Really, talking with a recruiter or hiring manager on a job interview is just like being a professional storyteller. I have a video blog about this topic too. Just turn your career history and achievements into a story and tell it like one. Give your story a beginning, middle and end. It really is that simple. It's funny to me really. My father used to say "don't ask Patty what time it is, she'll tell you how to build a watch." I come from a long line of Storytellers. Well, ok, sales people. But the result is the same. Sales people are great story tellers. As a job seeker, you are selling yourself so you have to be a storyteller. When I was a job seeker I didn't know how to do this! In fact, I didn't even know I was supposed to! But now I can share with you - you are supposed to! Amazing really because I love telling stories. Hence the watch building reference. So good luck with your story telling. Practice with your family and friends and Go Jobing!
